Menston Automatic, Systematic and Hydromatic in defeating Killinghall 3-0

The first time I set foot in Killinghall was when I appeared as an extra in 'Grease', filmed in Killinghall Country Park. Look closely, and you might see my head bobbing up and down behind Olivia Newton-John during the iconic 'Fun House' scene, during which she duets with John Travolta on 'You're The One That I Want. ' Alas, my relationship with Travolta ended on a sour note upon his discovery that I was behind a small prank in which I altered the film's promotional material to display 'Grease starring John Revolting and Olivia Neutron-Bomb'. He no longer returns my calls.
There were not many chills multiplying on a balmy spring day as Killinghall took on Menston Rangers. Menston were seeking their eleventh consecutive league victory and aiming to keep maximum pressure on league leaders Ripon, who had earlier been gifted another three points from a fourth forfeited fixture of the season. The prolonged dry spell meant that both teams had to contend with a challenging pitch, with an uneven bounce. Chances were a rarity in the opening forty-five minutes, notable for some lovely midfield play from Machell and, less happily, a serious-looking injury to Casey, who would be a sad loss were he to miss any future matches.
To paraphrase the half-time team talk, coach A Deacon parlayed, "you better shape up, 'cause I need a goal" while coach B Titchmarsh pouted, "ooh, ooh, ooh, honey" in the background.* This was music to the ears of the Menston players, who stepped up in the second half and produced a much more penetrating display. Miller opened the scoring, finishing well from a half-decent Ainsworth cross. The second goal, also dispatched by Miller, had a hint of offside about it. Scorer turned provider for the third, as Miller assisted Holliday-Gomes, who made no mistake. A comfortable victory and another clean sheet, with Barker singled out for an exquisite performance.
Three points secured and the league title meditates a little way in the direction of Menston Juniors, who remain hopelessly devoted to winning games of football.

* - for the avoidance of doubt, these are the lyrics to "You're The One That I Want"
